A character certificate - often called a Police Clearance Certificate, or PCC - is a short official document from the police confirming that you have no adverse criminal record on file. It is one of the most frequently requested documents for anyone changing jobs, applying for a visa, bidding for a contract or renting a home.

Who issues it in MP
In Madhya Pradesh the character certificate is issued by the state police through their citizen services portal. When you apply online, the request is routed to the relevant police jurisdiction for verification, and the certificate is issued digitally - there is no need to stand in line at a police station.
Documents you need
- Aadhaar or another government photo ID
- Address proof for the address to be verified
- A passport-size photograph
- The reason for the request (job, visa, tenancy, and so on)
- For applicants under 18, a parent or guardian's documents are accepted
How the process works
- Submit the application on the MP Police citizen portal with your ID and address proof.
- The request is sent to the local police for antecedent verification.
- Once verification is complete, the certificate is issued digitally.
- You download and use the certificate for your job, visa or other purpose.
